ADNOC IS TITLE SPONSOR OF THE ABU DHABI TOUR’S OPENING STAGE FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Desert stage to end in Western Region capital Madinat Zayed

Madinat Zayed,20 October 2016 – (The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is the title sponsor of the opening stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour, for the second consecutive year

The opening stage, today, starts in Madinat Zayed, the capital of the vast Al Gharbia (Western Region), passing through the historic oasis town of Liwa and alongside the Rub Al Khali, also known as Empty Quarter, before returning to Madinat Zayed for a sprint finish.

ADNOC is a natural sponsor for this stage. Although the company’s headquarters is located in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, Al Gharbia is the location for a modern industrial city that has been built by ADNOC to house its employees, who work at the petrochemical complex of Ruwais, and their families.

A multi-million-dollar investment Ruwais includes over 7,000 homes, a modern general hospital and purpose-built clinic, eight schools – providing elementary to secondary education for 6,400 students – a shopping mall with over 261 outlets, recreation and community centers, and sports and health clubs.

ADNOC also actively supports the Al Gharbia communities of Madinat Zayed, Liwa and Shuweihat, providing resources, employment and training opportunities to UAE nationals. The region’s companies are given priority in the provision of contracting and supply services.

A sponsor of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour in 2015, ADNOC has also supported successful amateur competitions, including the Liwa Cycling Challenge and the Adnoc Cycling Challenge, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the UAE Cycling Federation.

Cycling in Abu Dhabi has been growing at an unprecedented rate in recent years, attracting large numbers of fitness and leisure cyclists. This in turn has led to a boom in local races. It’s also reflected in the growing number of visitors cycling in Abu Dhabi – both those who come specifically to ride, and those who enjoy it as part of their stay.

The 2017 Abu Dhabi Tour, which will take place from 23-26 February, will give a further boost to the Abu Dhabi cycling community. It will be the first time that the race is included in the UCI WorldTour calendar and it is expected to attract many of the world’s top cyclists.
